Moving in Wedding Season and Diwali: Truck Shortages, Pricing and Booking Window

Many families wait for an auspicious date before shifting homes. The problem is that thousands of other families, wedding planners and traders choose the same weeks. If you are moving in Gurgaon, Delhi or Noida between now and the new year, this guide explains what changes and how to protect your date and budget.

Why festive-season moves are different

Most of the year, demand for packers and movers is fairly even. In festive and wedding weeks it bunches up:

  • Trucks are shared with other work. The same vehicles carry wedding décor, catering equipment, gifts and retail stock for Diwali sales, so fewer are free for household moves.
  • Crews are stretched. Skilled packers and loaders are booked across several jobs in the same few days, so late bookings may get rushed crews.
  • Roads slow down. Market areas and highways get crowded around festivals, so loading, transit and unloading take longer.
  • Auspicious dates cluster. Many families want the same muhurat, so demand piles onto a handful of days.

Because of this, the same move can be easy to book in a quiet week and difficult on a festival weekend.

The 2026 calendar: dates to watch

Confirm exact dates with your family pandit or a trusted panchang, since sources can differ by a day.

Diwali. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 10 November, with the main Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras and Diwali week are popular for griha pravesh and new beginnings, so expect high demand around 6 to 10 November. hindutone

Wedding season. Weddings open after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November 2026, and pause from 13 December 2026 to 14 January 2027 for Kharmas. The same listing shows 4 marriage dates in November (21, 24, 25 and 26) and 7 in December, the last on Saturday 12 December. hindutonehindutone

That makes the window from late November to 12 December short and crowded. Weddings pause again after that, and February is the fullest month of the later season, with 13 dates. Truck and crew demand will rise again early in 2027. hindutone

What this means in practice:

Period What to expect
Now to 5 November Calmer, but filling quickly before Diwali
6 to 10 November Peak Diwali demand, tight availability
11 to 19 November Often easier, a good gap to book
20 November to 12 December Wedding rush, busiest on muhurat dates
13 December to mid-January Wedding pause, usually easier to book

Why prices and quotes change

We do not recommend a fixed “festive surcharge” figure, because every move is different. But these factors commonly push quotes up in peak weeks:

  1. Vehicle availability. When trucks are scarce, operators price accordingly.
  2. Extra manpower. Weekend or holiday crews and overtime are costlier.
  3. Distance and return load. Long-distance trucks that may return empty during peak days can cost more.
  4. Time-sensitive slots. A specific muhurat hour limits scheduling flexibility.
  5. Building rules. Many Gurgaon societies restrict move-in and move-out hours and need lift booking and NOC, which compresses the working window on busy days.

How to keep cost under control:

  • Ask for an itemised written quote and ask how long it stays valid.
  • Request a free pre-move survey, so volume and truck size are estimated properly.
  • Confirm there are no hidden charges for loading, unloading, parking, stairs or waiting time.
  • Be flexible by one or two days. Moving on the day before or after a peak date can make booking easier and sometimes cheaper.

How early should you book?

Our standard advice is to book at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance. In festive and wedding season, aim for the long end of that range or earlier.

  • Local moves in Delhi NCR: book 2 to 3 weeks ahead if you can.
  • Interstate moves (for example Delhi to Mumbai or Bangalore): book 3 to 4 weeks ahead, as long-distance trucks are the first to run short.
  • Car and bike transport: book early, since carriers need to be matched with a route.
  • Office or factory shifting: plan 4 weeks or more, because it needs a survey, a schedule and more crew.
  • International shipments: start even earlier, since packing, documentation and customs clearance take time.

If your move falls on Dhanteras, Diwali or a wedding muhurat date, confirm the booking in writing, including the date, arrival time, truck size and crew count.

A simple booking checklist

  1. Fix your preferred date and one backup date.
  2. Check your society’s rules for moving hours, lift access, security deposit and NOC.
  3. Book a pre-move survey so the quote is based on real volume.
  4. Confirm insurance and what it covers during transit.
  5. Get everything in writing: date, price, inclusions, truck size, number of staff and cancellation terms.
  6. Declutter first. Donate or sell what you do not need, since fewer items mean a smaller truck and a smaller bill.
  7. Label by room and keep valuables, documents, medicines and puja items with you.

Special tips for Diwali and griha pravesh

  • Move puja items yourself. Pack idols, diyas and puja samagri separately and carry them personally, so they arrive first and are set up before the ceremony.
  • Do not leave packing to the last day. Start 7 to 10 days before, room by room.
  • Plan the first night. Keep bedding, a kettle, snacks, chargers and basic toiletries in an “open first” box.
  • Avoid fireworks days for fragile loads. Smoke, crowds and road closures near markets can slow the truck.
  • Check lift and parking at both addresses so the truck can reach the building without delay.

Tips for wedding-season movers

  • Do not shift valuables and wedding items on the same truck as a heavy household load. Keep jewellery, outfits and gifts with the family.
  • Coordinate with the wedding schedule. Plan the move for a quieter day, not the week of the ceremony.
  • If you are moving after the wedding, book early, since returning families often shift soon after.
  • Check guest arrival dates if you are hosting, so the new home is functional by then.

Frequently asked questions

Is it more expensive to move during Diwali or wedding season?
Quotes can be higher in peak weeks because trucks and crews are in short supply. A written, itemised quote protects you from surprises.

Can I get a truck at short notice?
Sometimes, but options narrow near festival dates. Booking early gives you a better choice of date, vehicle and crew.

Is a weekday move cheaper than a weekend?
Weekdays are often easier to schedule and may cost less, but this depends on availability and your building’s rules.

Should I avoid moving on a muhurat date?
Not necessarily. Just book earlier and confirm the arrival time in writing.
